The Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis), commonly known as the fruit borer or fruit core-eating worm, is an omnivorous pest. It parasitizes more than 250 plant species and can cause severe damage to over 250 types of fruits, including mango, guava, sugar apple, carambola, loquat, wampee, sapodilla, avocado, peach, plum, apricot, papaya, banana, mandarin orange, tangerine, orange, pomelo, tomato and chili pepper.
When crops are infested by Oriental fruit fly larvae, the fruits may drop prematurely or lose their economic value. In severely infested areas, this pest can lead to total crop failure or yield losses exceeding 80%. It produces 3 to 5 generations annually. In regions with distinct winters, it overwinters as pupae; in warmer winter areas, it has no strict overwintering period and remains active. Its life cycle is asynchronous, with all life stages often present simultaneously.
